7 Wash Day Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Hair

If your hair never feels as good at home as it does after the salon, this might be why. Most of us have been washing our hair the same way for years without realising that a few small habits are quietly working against us. Here are the seven most common wash day mistakes and what to do instead.

1. Turning the Water Way Too Hot

A hot shower feels great but your hair disagrees. High water temperatures strip the scalp of its natural oils and force the hair cuticle open, leaving lengths feeling dry, frizzy, and harder to manage after styling.

Fix it: Wash with warm water and finish with a cool rinse to seal the cuticle and add shine. It takes some getting used to, but your hair will thank you.

2. Washing Too Often

Over-washing is one of the most common mistakes, especially for people who think squeaky clean is the goal. Washing every day strips the scalp faster than it can replenish its natural oils, which often triggers even more oil production over time.

Fix it: Aim to wash every two to three days and let your scalp recalibrate. Dry shampoo can help bridge the gap while your scalp adjusts.

3. Rough Towel Drying

Rubbing your hair dry with a towel creates friction against the cuticle while it is at its most vulnerable. This is one of the leading causes of frizz and breakage over time, and most people do it without thinking.

Fix it: Blot and squeeze instead of rubbing. A microfibre towel or a soft cotton t-shirt will absorb water far more gently than a standard bath towel.

4. Aggressive Brushing on Wet Hair

Wet hair stretches before it breaks, which makes it significantly more prone to damage. Brushing aggressively from root to tip while hair is soaking wet puts a lot of unnecessary stress on each strand.

Fix it: Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush and always work from the ends up. Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray first to reduce resistance.

5. Using the Wrong Shampoo for Your Hair Type

Not all shampoos are created equal and using one that does not suit your hair type can cause more problems than it solves. A heavy moisturising shampoo on fine hair will weigh it down. A clarifying formula used too often on dry or colour-treated hair will strip it bare.

Fix it: Match your shampoo to your hair's actual needs. Fine hair benefits from volumising or lightweight formulas. Dry or textured hair needs something more nourishing. Colour-treated hair needs a sulphate-free option to preserve tone and condition.

6. Forgetting About Your Scalp

Most people focus on the lengths and completely neglect the scalp, even though scalp health is the foundation of everything. Buildup of product, oil, and dead skin cells can clog follicles and affect hair growth over time.

Fix it: Massage your shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips (not your nails) for at least a minute before rinsing. Consider a scalp scrub or clarifying treatment once a month to keep things balanced.

Wash day is the foundation of every good hair day that follows. Get these basics right and you will notice the difference not just in how your hair looks, but in how much easier it is to style at home.
